The code simply ran as a boot loader (otheros.bld). Not that this is nothing, it's just still behind the protection (ie, can't get to the RSX/etc).
However, that's the right way to think when trying a software exploit. Like Geohot agreed - you don't need linux to do the exploit, so do the exploit on the boot loader and then load your software. At least, if the code of the exploit Geo made could be made on the boot loader, one wouldn't need to wait for linux to load to only then try the exploit.
Now that's something the community could do to help Geo or the others trying it... a version of his exploit that runs directly at boot to quicken the testing/troubleshooting. (Not that I know how to do that, unfortunately... maybe some day).
