Summary: Beautiful, beautiful
Avalon can be compared to David Cronenberg's "eXistenZ". Those who haven't seen that will compare it to Dark City, or its plot rip-off, The Matrix.
This film bares much of a resemblance to previous Oshii films, including
Patlabor 2, Ghost in the Shell, and most significantly, Angel's Egg. Like
most of Oshii's films, it's a surreal piece about the confusion of dreams
and reality. The visuals are absolutely astounding. You will be
hard-pressed to find a live action piece with visuals as detailed, complex,
and memorable as Avalon. Like Angel's Egg, the plot and characters stated
directly by the dialogue alone can be quite simplistic and shallow, but this
is mostly a visual piece, and a very intelligent one. Much of the
commentary and true meaning is found through the film's obscure visuals and
symbolism. Even if you don't really get it in the end, it'll leave you
thinking for a long while. Those who are up to repeated viewings will start
to discover what the film is truely about, as randomly interpretational as
it -may seem- at first.
This film is truly a visionary masterpiece, and is not to be
missed!
