Commas are used to separate the elements of a list. If one (or both) of the last two elements is long, a comma and the word "and" should be used; otherwise, the word "and" is sufficient. Eg.
On Saturday I got up early, did some shopping in the city centre, tidied up the flat, and then cooked a large meal for my family.
When I was studying in Russia, I went to Moscow, Smolemsk and Novosibirsk.
