У меня слишком сильно другой интерес. Для меня 3D - это гораздо скорее игры и вообще декоративное искусство, чем шестерни. Но информации я по этому поводу просматриваю, тем не менее, очень много и знаю точно использование 3D печати в промышленности развивается, причём очень активно.

Думаю что сегодня это уже вопрос стоимости, причём самого принтера, а не печати. А не возможности/невозможности. То что домой такой принтер не укупишь, чтобы металлом печатать - это да. Но чтобы его в принципе еще не существовало - вряд ли.
